Guidelines for Platform (Oral) Presentations
Maximum length: 15 minutes
Time for questions or comments: 3 minutes
Format: Microsoft Powerpoint Version 2512 or 2603 (.pptx)
Tips for preparing an effective oral presentation:
-
Don’t run over your allotted time! The Chair of the session will cut you off once you exceed the 15 minutes for your presentation, so plan your presentation carefully. A good rule is to allot 1 minute for each slide in your Powerpoint deck. However, if there are a lot of data on the slide or a complex concept is discussed, then allot 2 minutes for it.
-
Do not present slides with complex tables or figures. Chances are the audience won’t be able to read what is on the slide anyway, or will not fully comprehend what is being presented. Keep it simple!
-
Colors and contrast: Make sure there is good contrast between the background and any text or figures on the slide so that the audience can easily read the material.
-
Acknowledgements: Be sure to acknowledge the colleagues who contributed to your study and the sources of funding. Provide your email address for any follow-up questions.
